Keep clear of an external overflow

An outside drain or inspection chamber may rise or overflow when the pipe cannot carry flow away. Wastewater can contain harmful material. Keep children and pets clear, avoid walking through it, and do not lift the cover or try to reach into the chamber. If water is entering a building, use the sewage overflow guidance and seek prompt help.

Reduce water use at fixtures that may feed the affected drain. Note whether the overflow happens when a toilet is flushed, a washing machine drains or a tap runs. If you can do so without approaching the water, take a photo showing the location and flow. Also note any nearby affected properties; a shared or public sewer issue may need to be reported to the sewerage provider.

Why outside drains overflow

Possible causes include a blockage, restricted pipe, damaged section or a problem farther along a shared route. A chamber’s location alone does not establish who owns the pipe. The boundary, which properties it serves and its connection to the public system all matter. Read who is responsible for drains? and contact the relevant water company if a public sewer may be involved.

Emergency unblocking can address an accessible restriction. If the fault recurs or damage is suspected, CCTV inspection can help identify visible conditions before repair choices are discussed.

An assessment may consider manual clearance or, where the obstruction and pipe condition allow, high-pressure water jetting. Jetting can break down some stubborn material, but it does not show whether the pipe is cracked, displaced or otherwise damaged. If water flow returns but the overflow recurs, ask whether a camera inspection can reach the relevant section and what its view can establish. Clearance and diagnosis answer different questions.

For a property in Birmingham or the West Midlands, report whether the overflow is foul or rainwater if known, whether indoor fixtures are affected and whether the problem is ongoing. Use the contact page for a private drainage enquiry. For road gullies or surface water on a public highway, contact the relevant local authority instead of assuming a private drain service is responsible.

Safe observation checklist

Stay back from the water and do not lift the cover to look inside. From a safe place, note whether the flow is foul smelling or visibly dirty, whether it appears when indoor water is used, whether rain is falling, and whether it is entering a building, footpath or road. Severn Trent distinguishes highway drainage from private drains and public sewers in its responsibility guide.

Use observations to choose who to notify, not to decide ownership. A private inspection point at one property may need the property manager or a private contractor. Several affected homes or a suspected public sewer call for contacting the sewerage company. A road gully or highway flooding may need the highway or local authority. The chamber’s position does not prove who owns the pipe.

If sewage enters a property or public area, follow sewage overflow safety steps and contact the sewerage provider where its network may be involved. Take a photo only from a safe distance; report the location and whether neighbours are affected. These clues help triage but do not remotely determine pipe ownership.

Quick answers

Questions about outside drain overflowing

Should I lift the outside drain cover?

No. Keep away from escaping wastewater and report the location from a safe position. The chamber's position does not prove pipe ownership.

Can jetting stop an outside drain overflowing?

Jetting may be considered for some obstructions after the pipe and restriction are assessed. It may not suit damaged pipework and does not inspect the pipe wall.

When should I contact the sewerage company?

Contact the provider if several properties appear affected or a public sewer may be involved. A single chamber's location cannot establish responsibility.
