Start with what you can observe
Drainage symptoms can overlap. A slow sink might be a local waste-pipe restriction; several affected fixtures may point to a shared route. An outside chamber that fills when water is used may indicate a blockage farther along. Odour or gurgling can have several explanations and does not prove the location of a fault.
If wastewater escapes, keep people and pets away, avoid contact and stop using affected fixtures where possible. Do not remove covers, enter chambers or use chemical treatments that could expose a responder to hazardous liquid. Record the time, affected areas and any earlier incidents.
Choose a symptom guide
- Blocked drain: symptoms across one or more connected outlets.
- Blocked toilet: avoid repeated flushing and note whether other fixtures are affected.
- Blocked sink or bath: distinguish a local fixture symptom from a wider restriction.
- Slow draining: track gradual or intermittent changes.
- Outside drain overflowing: safe steps for a rising external chamber.
- Sewage overflow: safety and escalation if wastewater escapes.
- Recurring blocked drains: investigate why the same point keeps blocking.
- Drain smell and gurgling: compare odour, sound and flow patterns.
- Commercial drainage problems: coordinate access and continuity at a workplace.
