Drain repair, lining or excavation?

The right repair method follows inspection: compare the defect, pipe condition, access and impact on the property.

Begin with the recorded defect

A blocked or damaged drain can need different work. Before selecting a method, establish what the inspection found, where the affected section lies and what the camera could not see. A CCTV survey may help locate the problem and record the pipe condition. A symptom or generic repair label is not enough to choose a method.

Local repair

A local repair may suit a defined defect where the section can be reached and the surrounding pipe remains serviceable. It targets a limited area. The site, depth, material and access all affect whether this is practical. Ask how the repair will connect to the existing pipe and how the completed section will be checked.

Lining

Lining places a new internal surface within a suitable existing pipe. It may reduce the need to expose some surfaces, but it requires a host pipe and defect shape that can accept the chosen system. Severe collapse, deformation, difficult bends or poor access can make lining unsuitable. See drain lining for the factors to discuss.

Excavation

Excavation exposes the buried pipe for direct repair or replacement. It can be appropriate where a pipe has collapsed, cannot be lined or needs direct access. It also affects the surface above the pipe and may involve reinstatement. Depth, route, nearby services and site use shape the work. See drain excavation and its planning guide.

Compare the scope, not the label

Ask what evidence supports the recommendation, what each option includes, what limitations remain, how access and surfaces are affected, and whether the work is covered by a written scope. A low-disruption method is not automatically appropriate; direct repair is not automatically excessive. The choice should fit the pipe and result required.

For a property in Birmingham or the West Midlands, use contact to discuss a survey or repair report. Confirm pipe responsibility first when the route may involve shared or public sewer sections; see who is responsible for drains?.

Compare the methods against the same questions

  • Local repair: Is the defect clearly bounded and can the affected section be reached? What will connect the repaired part to the existing pipe?
  • Lining: Is the host pipe sound enough and its shape suitable? How will bends, branches, connections and internal diameter be handled?
  • Excavation: Is direct access needed because the pipe is collapsed, badly deformed or inaccessible? What area will be opened and reinstated?

For each option, ask what inspection finding supports it, what uncertainty remains, what work is included and how completion will be recorded. Compare effects on the property as well as the repair method: access, surface disruption, likely follow-up and whether other sections stay unchecked. Do not infer that a method is best from words such as “no-dig” or “full replacement.”

ApproachQuestions to askWhat the label alone does not tell you
Local repairIs the defect bounded and can that section be reached?Whether surrounding pipework is sound
LiningCan the host pipe and geometry accept the selected liner?Whether every branch or collapse can be treated
ExcavationWhat evidence locates the defect and what reinstatement is included? The area or disruption without a site-specific scope

If the evidence is only a recurring blockage and no defect has been located, ask whether clearance or further investigation should come first. A diagnosis and repair recommendation are separate decisions. The CCTV survey report guide can help you ask how a recommendation follows from recorded findings.
